Why drivers often owe less than they fear
At 76¢ a mile, 14,000 business miles is a deduction of over $10,000. On $28,000 of app earnings that cuts profit by more than a third before any tax is figured. What catches drivers off guard is self-employment tax: it applies from the first $400 of profit, even when the standard deduction wipes out income tax.
Log every trip. The IRS expects a contemporaneous record of date, miles and purpose; platform summaries of "online miles" help but are not a full log. The mileage deduction calculator handles the 2026 mid-year rate change for any vehicle use.
Questions freelancers ask
How much tax do DoorDash drivers pay?
Dashers are independent contractors, so they pay self-employment tax (15.3% of 92.35% of profit) plus income tax on profit. Because the standard mileage deduction is large, many part-time drivers owe little income tax, but SE tax still applies once net earnings pass $400.
Should I use the mileage rate or actual car expenses?
Most delivery and rideshare drivers come out ahead with the standard mileage rate: 72.5¢ per mile for January–June 2026 and 76¢ from July 1, 2026 after the IRS mid-year increase. You must choose the standard rate in the first year you use the car for business to keep that option later.
Which miles can Uber and DoorDash drivers deduct?
Miles driven for business: driving to a pickup, with a passenger or order, and between jobs while logged in and working. Your commute from home to the first pickup area is generally treated as personal, so keep a mileage log or use an app that records trips.
Will I get a 1099 from DoorDash or Uber?
Platforms issue Form 1099-NEC or 1099-K when you pass the reporting threshold, but you owe tax on all earnings whether or not you receive a form.
